Time and Speed in the Social Universe of Capital by Michael Neary and Glenn Rikowski

ISBN - 0 333 98499 4, pp. 53-65
Neary and Rikowski: "This chapter...unfolds a theory of the speed of life in capitalist society. This theory rests upon illuminating the significance of Karl Marx's concept of socially necessary labour time for exploring the social form of time in capitalist society." (p.54)
The book in general - "This book is concerned with the significance of time in work and everyday life. The contributors are among the foremost authorities in the field..."
Social Conceptions of Time - Edited by Graham Crow and Sue Heath

Fuel for the Living Fire: Labour-Power" by Glenn Rikowski
In The Labour Debate: an investigation into the theory and reality of capitalist work, Edited by Ana C. Dinerstein and Michael Neary, Ashgate, Hampshire, 2002. ISBN - 0 7546 1779 3, pp. 179-202
Glenn Rikowski says: "We live in the social universe of capital. The substance of this social universe is value. Labour-power is the unique commodity in capital's social universe: it is the only commodity that can generate value greater than that required for its own maintenance and social reproduction, that, is, surplus-value. Effective value-producing labour depends on the transformation of labour-power into labour in the labour process. Raising labour-power quality increases relative surplus value...Education and training are implicated in this process as institutions that socially produce labour-power." (p. 196)
The book in general - "This book revitalises labour as the fundamental constitutive principle of the social world, through a radical reinterpretation of Marx’s social theory."
The Labour Debate - Edited by Ana Dinerstein and Mike Neary
